No account
A free kanban board with no signup.
There is no account because there is nothing for one to do. The board is saved in your browser, so no server needs to know who you are, and no password stands between you and your own cards.
What “no signup” means here
- No email, no password, no verification link, no trial clock and no workspace to name before you can start.
- Open the board, give it a name, and add a card. That is the whole onboarding.
- No newsletter and no onboarding sequence, because Kaniban does not have your address.
- Nothing to cancel. If you stop using it, you stop. If you want it gone, clear the site's data in your browser.
How the board persists without an account
Your browser has storage of its own, and Kaniban uses it: the board sits under the kanban.v1 key in localStorage, with pictures in IndexedDB. Close the tab, restart the computer, come back a month later, and the board is still there, because the browser kept it rather than a server. The one thing to know is that clearing the browser's site data clears the board too. Export in the rail menu writes the whole board to a single file you keep, and Plus can write one to a folder of your choosing every time the board changes.
What the paid tiers ask for instead
Supporter and Plus still have no account. A purchase through Gumroad, or a gift, comes with a licence key tied to an email address. Activating sends a code to that address, and the browser you activate becomes one of up to two named browser profiles the licence covers. You can replace or revoke a registration later from the app, after verifying by email. There is no password at any point, and the board's contents are never part of the exchange.
Free means free
The free tier is the board and calendar views, two workspaces, notes, tags, due dates and timers, the command deck, filters, and export and import. It shows ads, kept outside the work grid, and that is what pays for it. Nothing you have written is ever locked behind a payment; what the paid tiers sell is more room and a quieter screen.
The trade
No account also means no sync and no sharing. The board lives on the machine you opened it on; moving it is an export and an import, not a login on another device. If a team needs the board, a tool with accounts is the right shape, and the comparisons say which. For one person, the trade tends to feel like relief.
Questions
Do I have to log in every time?
There is nothing to log into. Open the page and the board is there, in the browser that saved it.
What if I open Kaniban in a different browser?
A different browser, or a different profile of the same browser, has its own storage and therefore its own board. Export from one and import into the other to carry it across.
Is my board private if there is no account protecting it?
An account protects a copy on a server. Kaniban keeps no such copy, so there is nothing on a server to protect. The board is as private as the computer and browser profile it lives in. What does leave the device is listed on the privacy page: cookieless analytics events without card content, ads on the free tier, and licence checks on paid tiers.
Can I create an account later to back the board up?
No account will ever exist. The backup is the export file, which you keep wherever you keep files. Plus adds automatic backup: point it at a folder and it writes a fresh copy whenever the board changes.
There is nothing to sign up for.
Open it, name a board, and start. If you do not like it, close the tab. You have not given anyone anything.
