What changed, and when.

The desktop app and the web app ship from the same code, so one list covers both. The version numbers are the desktop app's. The web app updates itself: when a new build is ready it shows a small pill in the board and reloads when you choose.

• A board is never migrated without a copy. Before an older board is brought up to the current shape, the original is kept whole, and a board written by a newer build is refused rather than misread.
• The board and the licensing API share a contract number, so a stale build finds out it is stale instead of failing quietly.
• The desktop app forwards the query string with API requests, which the licence check needs.

• A desktop update is a pill in the board, not a dialog over it. Restart when it suits you; otherwise the update installs when the app next quits.
• The first-run tour has a check to press, a way out, and an arrow that finishes its line.

• The command deck takes slash commands: /nc:title makes a card, /ncl:name a column, /focus:column shows one column. Typed alone, a command opens as a field that waits for the missing part.
• A card moved out of view says where it went.
• Boards come in more colours, column names fit their headers, and one button got quieter.
• Desktop releases carry a manifest, so the download link on the homepage always names the current installer, and installed copies find updates from it.
• The site says in plain words what it is: local-first, offline, personal, with time tracking and a Windows app. Two new questions on the homepage, and a 404 page that lands you somewhere kind.

• Kaniban installs on Windows as a desktop app: an installer, a window of its own, and the board on your PC. Everyone else keeps the web app, which installs from the address bar.

Before the desktop app · September 2026

• The board installs as a web app and boots offline, and waits for a reload before it updates rather than swapping itself under a running session.
• Exports are one sealed .kani file, a zip when a board carries pictures and plain JSON otherwise; import still reads the older forms.
• A card lists its timer sessions with a total, and can be duplicated. The mouse wheel scrolls the board sideways.
• The summary gets a period to look at, and Kani reads it and says what it means.
• Feedback and ratings post to Kaniban's own endpoint, and the homepage quotes what people said, with their permission.
• Paid licences activate with a code sent to the licence's email, cover two named browser profiles, and check in daily with seven days of offline grace.
• Nobody fetches what their tier cannot use: the free tier no longer loads the code for views it does not have.
• Analytics moved to Vercel Web Analytics, which is cookieless, so the consent banner is only about ads and only inside the EEA.
• Kani the crab arrived on the rail with opinions, a bubble to say them in, and a preference for the beach when you have stopped working.

Where to watch

This page is updated with each release. The desktop app announces new versions itself; the web app shows a pill. There is no newsletter, because Kaniban does not have your email address.
