A kanban app for Windows that keeps your board on your PC.

Kaniban runs as its own desktop app on Windows: an installer, a window with its own place on the taskbar, and a board that never leaves the machine. Same cards, same four views, same timer, no browser tab to lose among the others.

What the desktop app is

It is the same board as the web app, wrapped as a native window, with every file it needs inside the installer. That is why it works offline from the first launch rather than after a first visit. There is no account to create and no sign-in on first run; it opens straight into a board, the way the web app does.

Updates arrive quietly. When a new version has been published, the app fetches it in the background and the board shows a small pill. Restart when it suits you, or not; the update also installs itself the next time the app quits. Nothing is swapped under a running session.

Installing

1. Download the installer. The link always points at the current version.
2. Run Kani-Setup.exe.
3. Windows may show a SmartScreen notice, which is what it does for a publisher it has not seen much of. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
4. The app opens into a board. Name it and start.

Where the board is stored

Inside the app's own data folder on your PC, not on a server and not in your browser's profile. That last part matters: the desktop app and a browser each keep their own board, and they do not see each other. To carry a board from one to the other, export it as a file from the rail menu and import it on the other side. That is also how you move to a new PC.

Or install from the browser

If you would rather not run an installer, Edge and Chrome can install Kaniban as an app from the address bar. It gets a window and an icon of its own, works offline once loaded, and shares the board with that browser, since it is that browser. It is the right choice if you already keep the board in a tab and just want it out of the tab strip.

macOS and Linux

There is no native app for either yet. The web app runs in any modern browser on both, and installing it from the address bar gives it a window of its own. The board behaves the same way: on the device, offline once loaded, no account.

What it costs

The same as the web app, because it is the web app. Free with ads outside the work grid; Supporter from $3 for 30 days removes them and adds the timeline and summary views; Plus is $10 once and adds unlimited boards, archive, column limits, templates, automatic backup to a folder, and the deeper summary. A paid licence covers up to two named browser profiles, and the desktop app counts as one.
